Vance rose to prominence with the image of a Rust Belt small-town youth striving to change his fate, largely thanks to his famous work Hillbilly Elegy. In the book, he shaped himself as a representative of the sinking small-town white working-class youth. His grandfather’s generation were traditional steel workers with stable income and decent life, but his mother became addicted to drugs, causing his family to break apart. He experienced many difficulties in life and later had military service experience, gaining strong emotional resonance from many lower-class whites. It can be said that his explosion in popularity completely benefited from Trump’s strong rise in 2016, igniting the fire of the lower-class white revolution.
But Vance deeply despised Trump and repeatedly claimed that Trump was spiritual heroin and America’s Hitler. It can be said that at that time, his understanding of Trump was quite clear. As a survivor who climbed from a small town to achieve class leap, he knew very well that Trump was not a representative of the interests of America’s lower-class whites. He was only using lower-class voters to fight against traditional establishment political elites, hijacking the Republican Party, and using whites’ sense of deprivation to incite anti-people-of-color and anti-immigration sentiments, attacking Democrats to seize power.
But while Vance crazily criticized Trump, he was not completely honest. He himself was not a lower-class white. In fact, his family conditions were not bad and not truly lower-class. He self-deprecated with the label of poverty to gain emotional resonance. He himself, like Trump, is a political opportunist with no so-called revolutionary ideal to fight for lower-class whites. Moreover, his path to class leap followed the traditional elite route. After retiring from the military, he entered Ohio State University and Yale Law School to become an elite. Anyone with a bit of common sense about America should know that lower-class families have absolutely no connection to this path. They cannot afford such expensive education.
So when Vance planned to run for Ohio senator, he realized he was isolated and needed to find a big tree for shelter from wind and rain, and Trump was that big tree. Driven by Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr., Fox host Tucker Carlson, Peter Thiel who is Vance’s former boss and financier, and other conservative activists, Vance formally defected to Trump. Trump changed from the spiritual heroin and America’s Hitler in his mouth to the savior of Americans and the MAGA leader he solely loyally serves. Peter Thiel is a very interesting person with great influence. For his stories, interested people can find relevant information themselves. If one day Vance wants to run for president, he will inevitably rely on his resources and find it hard to escape his control after gaining power.
From this storyline, it is not hard to understand what kind of people the core leadership of MAGA are. Trump is a political ambitious man. His run for US president is more to serve his own political ambitions and family interests. He does not care whether America can be great again. JD Vance’s early evaluation of Trump was very accurate: spiritual heroin, America’s Hitler. But JD Vance is also a political vulture and opportunist. He forcibly represented lower-class whites through low-level political packaging, then abandoned political ideals for power and attached himself to Trump. Moreover, he is just Peter Thiel’s puppet on a string. Even if he becomes US president, he will be remotely controlled by Trump and Peter Thiel because he himself has no charisma and no strength. He has a large group of Indian relatives. His wife and children all have Indian faces, yet he constantly promotes anti-immigration policies. If he dares to fall out with Trump, this alone would become his fatal weakness. If America does not welcome new immigrants and advocates white supremacy, then Vance is a typical case of double death under both standards.
It is not hard to imagine that the Democratic candidate in 2028 is very likely California Governor Newsom. Newsom is handsome with elegant speech. He should be another charismatic political figure after Clinton and Obama with huge influence on female voters. He is a moderate traditional Democratic political elite, not a radical left, and more likely to gain support from centrist voters. If you are a MAGA voter, looking at Vance’s family gathering photo and comparing it with Newsom’s family photo, who would you vote for?
Actually, I think Vance would have more opportunities developing in India. After all, with his large family of Indian relatives, he can well prove his loyalty to India.
